How Can Low Ejection Fraction Be Treated?

My grandfather is 88 years old and has had a heart attack this week. He had an echocardiogram and went into afib. The doctors waited two days and the fluid on his heart and lungs disappeared. Today he had a stress test and failed. Following the stress test he had a cathodization which show his heart Working at 20% with 2 chambers damaged. Hey could not do any repair during the procedure. Tomorrow they meet with the surgeon. Is there much more that can be done? How long on average can someone his age live with 20% function?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Unfortunately, there is no surgery to improve ejection fraction but don't worry, many people with even 15 percent live a good quality of life.

Abolish salt from diet take Planep 25 od, ramipril 2.5 od, Clopivas AP OD (post meal) and Dytor 10 mg 1od (11am).

Go for a regular cardio checkup and get an echo done every 6 months. Avoid strenuous exercise, quit junk, smoking and alcohol.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
