How Can Insomnia While Withdrawing From Oxycodone Be Treated?

I have just had knee replacement surgery 3 weeks ago and have been trying to ween myself off my pain medicine (oxycodon acetaminophen) but I am having trouble sleeping at night. Is there anything I can take to help? I am uncomfortable in my hip as well as my knee and the only comfort I can find is walking through our house, using a walker, all through the night. It is not as bad in the day time. I was taking 1 tablet every 4 hours but I was going 5-7 hours between doses.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is difficult to treat this type of insomnia. It should get back to normal once you are off the narcotic completely. You could try some Melatonin about 30 minutes before bedtime but if you are in pain that may not help much. Make sure your doctor is helping you taper off the narcotics.

Hope I have answered your query.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
