How Can Hypertension Be Treated?

I have been struggling with my blood pressure for 4 years. I have had readings as high as 230/115. I was tested for pheochromocytoma which was negative. My blood pressure can run normal for 2-3 weeks and then out of nowhere it can rise to 170/94. I ve tried different meds. I am now on Losartan. Any thoughts on this frustrating condition would be appreciated.

For control of blood pressure (BP), initially one drug is recommended. If one drug does not control BP effectively, then a combination of two, three, and four drugs depending upon control of BP, is recommended. You have high BP since a long time. These drugs not only control high blood pressure but also prevent and cure complications of high BP. Combination of drugs has synergistic effects. That means, these drugs complement each other’s effect and prevents development of each other’s side effects.
You are taking only losartan. So in brief, you need a combination of drugs for effective control of BP.
Advice
1.     Continue losartan as suggested
2.     You can add hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg per oral daily after meal
3.     Regular exercise at least 30 minutes for 5 days in a week. The best types of exercise for lowering BP are walking, jogging, cycling, swimming and dancing
4.     Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol
5.     Consume less salt
6.     Avoid smoking, alcohol, coffee and caffeinated beverages
7.     Lose extra weight if you are overweight and keep your body mass index between 19 and 25. BMI is calculated by formula BMI = Weight in Kilograms / (height in meters x height in meters)
8.     Reduce your metal stress because stress activates sympathetic system and increases BP
9.     Measure your BP regularly and be in touch with your doctor
10.     Investigations
a.     Blood sugar (fasting & post-prandial)
b.     Fasting lipid profile
c.     Serum creatinine
If your BP is not getting controlled by above measures then you should take a second opinion from a cardiologist.
I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question
