How Can High Cholesterol Levels Be Treated?

Hello, I am a 59 year old female with a weight over 220 pounds; I have exercised everyday all my life. My cholesterol LDL is in the 200! very dangerous I know; I have tried crestor with vomiting and arm pain. The doctor has taken me off and said to follow a strict diet. I also was diagnosed with white matter disease from a Neurologist, but I found that out by accident - she never discussed that with me (could the high cholesterol be the cause of the white matter disease?? I also have Parathyroid issues with a very high PTH level. One doctor told me that the Parathyroid adenoma is causing the increased cholesterol. I can t get a good answer from any of the doctors. I do take a blood pressure med and an aspirin (baby). I have headaches everyday which makes me wonder if the cholesterol is causing the white matter disease... I am just overwhelmed with what to do. Since my body doesn t tolerate the statin ... what do I do?? I have bone pain from the parathyroid and it is difficult to move occasionally.

Hi,

In my opinion, you should start fenofibrate. It is a newer cholesterol-lowering drug. It is not from statin group of drug. It is not having much side effects like statins. Cholesterol-lowering especially LDL reduction is much better by fenofibrate as compared to statins. So it is better to start fenofibrate. Also, put more emphasis on diet and aerobic exercise.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
