How Can Hiatal Hernia Be Treated?

Hi my name is Karen and I am doing some research for my brother who has a hernia. He was bucked off his horse some time ago had some cracked ribs and this bulge right between his rib cage. The doctors don t suggest surgery but it bothers him after he eats or has a few to many beers. I believe it is called a hiatal hernia. What can be done?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for the query at HCM

Management of Hiatal hernia is mainly by reducing stomach acid and acid reflux symptoms.
-Avoid eating too spicy, fatty fried food
-Loose weight if needed
-Avoid citrus fruits and juices in diet
-Avoid or reduce alcohol consumption
-Eat frequent small meals
-avoid coffee, chocolate, caffeinated carbonated drinks
-Do not go to bed on a full stomach. Give atleast 2 hours between dinner and bedtime
-Use low-fat diary products
-Raise the head end of bed by using wood blocks under bed post to reduce acid reflux
-Use Omeprazole 20 mg daily to reduce stomach acid.
-Avoid using medications that irritate stomach like aspirin, Ibuprofen etc. If such medications are needed, take it along with food only.

If all these measures do not control symptoms, follow-up with a primary care provider/ surgeon to assess the need for surgery.

Hope I was able to help you
