How Can Genital Herpes Be Treated?

A couple of years ago my doctor informned me I had been exposed to genital herpes. I am a 59 year old man. I had no knowledge of exposure but I have had my first flare up. How often does this happen? Is there any way to get rid of it permanently? What do I do about it?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern.

1. Genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus [HSV], and because it has flared up now so one has to exclude concomitant infection with genital warts caused by HPV [human papilloma virus] and because at present there is no known test in men to know about the same thus one cannot know about the duration and from whom you've contracted [so it is recommended to have regular checkup with your Physician]

2. If symptoms are mild, then to ease symptoms:

i. Drink plenty of fluids to dilute your urine, which will make passing urine less painful.

ii. Take a salt bath and keep the affected area clean which will help prevent infection and help it heal quicker.

PS. Avoid sharing your personal items and keep separate shaving blades for face, underarm, and pubic hairs.
. Do not touch them as this may spread the infection to surrounding areas.

3. If you think the symptoms are worsening contact your Primary care provider [PCP], Infectious Disease Doctor.
