How Can Food Poisoning Be Treated?

I got a parasite from Sunday brunch...on way home stomach pain, sever lower back pain, then chills and temperature in the evening. Tonight I bought Para-rid (Aomega Alpha) and took one right away - I see I should take 3 more tonight. I m almost afraid to because of the pain after taking one! I need reassurance please.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Food poisoning can cause severe symptoms for a day or two and then the patient is better. This is because with food poison, the patient takes only the toxin and not the microbe that produces it and as soon as it is out of the system the patient is much better. Food poison mostly causes vomiting.

If your symptoms are for longer then 2 days then very likely you are having a viral infection of the stomach and bowels. Presence of fever and not much vomiting also supports that you might be having some viral infection. These are self limiting as well but may last 3-7 days.

Para-rid is not a medication of the traditional medicine and information on its use is very scarce. I would recommend you to take oral rehydration solution to substitute the lost water and electrolytes, paracetamol and ibuprofen to help with pain and fever, rest, try to eat small amounts of food and drink regularly and in a few days you should start to feel better.

If no improvement in 2-3 days or any worsening please see your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
