How Can Fibromyalgia Be Treated While Suffering From High Cortisol Levels?

I have been diagnosed with high cortisol levels, adrenal insufficieny, vitamin d deficiency. I have chronic migraines, weight gain, widespread joint and muscle pain, fatigue, depression. Antidepressants only cause more weight gain and do not alleviate the depressive symptoms. I am on 50,000 iu vitamin d per week. I do not want to treat fibromyalgia symptoms with pharmaceuticals, ie lyrica. Any suggestions?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

1. Since diagnosis is made by a specialist, [ possibly a Rheumatologist], even then consider the second opinion for available options and conservative management. The immune marker will help establish prognosis and available options for the disease, thus are worth pursuing.
2. Because there is no identifiable cause thus treatment is symptomatic, as a result, both pharmacological and nonpharmacological measures are used as an adjuvant to get a good control of pain and extended symptom-free period, such as: Relaxation and stress management [stress is trigger response to fibromyalgia symptoms], thus yoga & Pranayama are helpful. Physiotherapy: wax massage, ultrasound/infrared technique to minimize pain. Diet rich in omega 3 is considered helpful in alleviating fibromyalgia symptoms. Sleep. Getting plenty of sleep is key to managing the symptoms of both syndromes, so it is important that they maintain good sleep habits and avoid caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco. Cognitive behavioral therapy [CBT]: it teaches people how to recognize symptoms and self-treat using a variety of strategies such as relaxation therapy, cognitive pain management, and rest.
3. Recent studies have shown cat's claw [uncaria tomentosa] to be a herbal remedy which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and prevents the activation of several inflammatory substances in the body, so it can prevent damage to your body’s cells by interacting with harmful molecules (free radicals) which are produced within your cells.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
