How Can Diverticulitis Be Treated?

I believe I have a diverticulitis flare up and saw the nurse practitioner Thursday. Also I have not had a bowel movement for a week now. She prescribed Cipro for the diverticulitis and recommended rectal suppository and if that didn t work then magnesium citrate. I believe the Cipro is helping but I still have not had a bowel movement. When I cramp and get the urge, I pass small pieces of what looks like an off-white discharge. What is my next step? Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can

Well, constiption is common in diverticulitis and I suggest to add Metronidazol to cipro since this is stadard treatment of diverticulitis. If the pain is mild, you are able to drink liquids, and you have no signs of complications, treatment may be at home with antibiotics. ALso changes in diet, starting with a clear-liquid or bland diet that is low in fiber until the pain goes away, then increasing the amount of fiber.

However, if there wont be improvement then it is advisable to do Ct scan to confirm the diagnosis and possible complications and intravenous therapy may be considered. You should also have probiotics.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
