How Can Diabetes And Elevated Cholesterol Levels Be Treated?

Hi I m Praveen aged 52 years. I m a borderline diabetic maintaining my blood sugar without medication. I recently did an ECG which showed an abnormality so then was advised to do a stress test and 2D echo which both came normal. I have slightly elevated cholesterol. My diet is quite simple and I walk daily more than 6 km as part of my lifestyle. I also exercise regularly and have had no chest pain. My BP is normal. Do I need to worry about the abnormal results in my ecg?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and understand your concern.

Cholesterol can be good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL). The one that counts is your LDL cholesterol if it is high. In patients with diabetes we prefer LDL to be even lower than other individuals so very likely because you have diabetes you will need to get something to reduce LDL.
The best medications to take to reduce LDL are statines like simvastatine or atorvastatine. You can talk with your doctor and have the prescription for this.
It is good that you are having a healthy diet and try to be active, this will help HDL cholesterol be in good values and is quite healthy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
