Hello,

Your question would best be served with also having an in-person examination by your doctor, because the burning may be due to a number of different things. I don't have your age or gender, and this can make a difference.

If you are a female and post-menopausal, genital irritation can be caused by a lack of estrogen. The vaginal and urethral tissues can become weakened from lack of estrogen. Your doctor can see this by the appearance of the vagina on speculum exam. If this is the case, a topical estrogen cream can help.

If you have been on an antibiotic (Bactrim), there may be yeast overgrowth from the vagina. If over the counter anti-yeast medications are not doing the trick, your doctor, if he/she confirms the irritation is due to yeast, may prescribe an oral antifungal medication. Another option is boric acid powder capsules used intervaginally.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh,
