How Can Anal Bleeding Be Treated?

My husband was constipated about a week ago and strained so hard for his bowel movement that it appears a vein in his anal area has ruptured and has been bleeding quite steadily for a week. The blood is not coming directly from the rectum but rather from an area just behind the rectum and his scrotum. When I examined the area, it appears that there was a blueish vein that appears to have opened up. We have hoped the bleeding would stop but it has continued for a week, to the point that he has been wearing a sanitary pad so as not to soil his underwear. Are you able to tell us what this is? His doctor has no available appointments until mid February. Unsure if this would require an emergency room visit.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

That could be hemorrhoids and less likely to be fissures. In fissures, due to constipation, the strain leads to cracks in the anal canal which bleed drop by drop and mostly are less painful.

Whereas hemorrhoids occur due to strain during defecation which leads to the veins of the anal canal to dilate and rupture and cause a gush of blood during defecation, they are more painful.

Take Rx sitz bath, Xylocaine cream (local application), Cremaffin syrup at night to decrease strain during defecation and antibiotic for prophylaxis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhadresh Lakhani
