How Can Allergic Rashes On The Body Be Treated?

I have a rash and hives that started on Thursday. Saturday I was given two shots of prednisone (one short acting and one long lasting) by a doctor. I have continued to have reoccurences of hives and rash. I get swollen lips, hands and feet. My shoulder was painful also. I take benydryl and it seems to help for a short while. My pulse rate went up to 99 at a sitting mode. I plan on trying to see an allergist this week. Is there anything else I can do until then?

Hello,

It looks like hives on the lips, hands and feet seems to be most probably due to allergic reaction and can be due to either any food or medication while can also be due to any soap or detergent, poison ivy, leather, latex, etc. I would suggest you to consult an allergist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like allergic tests like patch test, RAST test, food challenge test, etc., can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

The tests will help in ruling out the exact cause of the allergen and once you know the cause of the allergic reaction you can avoid exposure to it to prevent allergy attack. The allergist can advise for oral anti-allergics as well as injectable steroids for relief. As of now you can take anti-allergics like Levocetrizine, Allegra to control the itching and swelling. Do cool compresses. Application of Calamine lotion can help in soothing the skin. You can also be instilled an immunotherapy that will help in reducing the severity and frequency of allergic attack.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
