How Can Acid Reflux And Abdominal Pain Be Treated?

I have been taking omeperazole for more than 10 years. I had VSG in 2015, prior to surgery I had been taking omeperazole for the start of an ulcer due to extreme stress, every time I tried to go off the medication the pain in my upper stomach, burning, nausea so I continued taking the meds. After VSG I fave severe acid reflux, I wake up choking coughing and sometimes vomiting. My Dr asked me to stop the omeperazole, try ranitidine (sp). The other medications I have tried are not effective. I am struggling with the symptoms. What should I do next, why are these symptoms consistently present? My Dr had given a name of a possible diagnosis which I believe would require an upper GI what are your thoughts? I have started taking the omeperazole again but still have frequent acid reflux in the night, burning pain in the awake hours.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms are nonspecific, but these may be suggestive of gastritis, GERD or hiatal hernia so you should do gastroscopy to evaluate it more accurately. This is caused by irritation of stomach mucosa by certain food or medications, stress and smoking. So firstly it should be treated with home remedies and changing dietary habits. You need to avoid fried food, carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol and spicy food. You should eat more milk products, vegetables and boiled food. Also, certain antiacid medications may be required such as Pantoprasole or Ranitidine. In cases of severe pain, diagnosis should be established with endoscopic tests which include gastroscopy or barium swallow test.

Hope I have answered your query.
