How Can A Giardia Infection Be Acquired During Pregnancy?

I have a puppy and I'm paranoid he may have Giardia. I am 20 weeks pregnant. Is Giardia infection caused only by mouth? Can Giarda somehow get into the body in other ways, such as, cracked skin, open wounds, through the anus or vagina or ears? Thank you.

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
The transmission of giardiasis is by feco-oral route.
This can occur by using contaminated water, food, playing with animals having the disease.
Routes of prevention are:
-Boiling water for one minute before use.
-Avoiding contamination of the food.
-Washing hands thoroughly after playing with pets and before food etc.

It can be diagnosed by simple test like microdcopic stool examination.
If infection is suspected, you can go for single dose of albendazole with your doctor's advice.
Take care.
