1. As you were a diagnosed case, so remain under the constant and regular supervision of your
Oncologist, I at most can explain the prognosis of your disease:
i. elevated CEA levels are more common in smokers and Inflammatory conditions and can also be elevated in other carcinomas including lung, breast, gastrointestinal and gynecological cancers
PS. the sensitivity of CEA is low for early colorectal patients and increases with increasing stage of the disease, so make sure to have regular follow up visits, for periodic physical examination and blood tests. [it is of more use for monitoring than for screening & diagnosis]
ii. presently it is normal range [2.5- 5ug/L], and CEA levels return to normal after successful surgical resection. [keep a note that normal levels do not necessarily indicate that recurrence has not occured], so have CEA surveillance every three months for at least three years after treatment.
PS. CEA monitoring is a part of postoperative management and in determining the prognosis.
