How Can Abdominal Bloating And Black Stool, Apart From Excessive Belching Be Diagnosed And Treated?

Hi, I have been having some issues with bloating feeling, and now have a black stool the last couple days. I seem to belch a lot and I have a very dry mouth and some seems like a funny smell up my nostrils. I know this is a lot, but was wondering what I should do? The stool does have a pungent smell too.

Hi,

It sounds like you may be experiencing some gastrointestinal issues, and it's important to seek medical attention promptly to determine the cause and proper treatment. Black stool can be an indication of gastrointestinal bleeding, which could be caused by a variety of conditions including ulcers, inflammation, or even cancer. Additionally, the bloating, belching, dry mouth, and funny smell could be symptoms of a digestive issue such as acid reflux or irritable bowel syndrome.

I would advise you to make an appointment with your primary care physician or a gastroenterologist as soon as possible. They will likely want to conduct a physical exam, as well as some tests such as a stool sample analysis, blood tests, and potentially imaging studies to determine the cause of your symptoms.

In the meantime, it may be helpful to avoid foods and drinks that could exacerbate your symptoms, such as spicy or acidic foods, alcohol, and caffeine. You could also try taking over-the-counter antacids or digestive enzymes to see if they provide any relief. However, it's important to remember that these measures are not a substitute for medical evaluation and treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Diwashish Biswas, Internal Medicine Specialist
