General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello Tina,
there are no fixed symptoms diabetes, in fact most common presentation is no symptoms, they are just diagnosed by chance. however, most present with repeated infections like boils, some may come with loss of weight, easy fatigablity, some time with complications like heart problem, kidney problem, nerves problem.

however, since your blood glucose is normal, need not worry about it.
but, since you have strong family history, it is highly advisable to take preventive steps like high physical activity like sports/brisk walk/running for at least 30 minutes a day, for 5 days a week and eat healthy most of time like fruits and vegetables, rather than creams, pizza etc. i would also like to know your age for further answer.

prevention is better than cure, but in this case it is the only cure.

take care.

Endocrinologist Dr. Minal Mohit's  Response
dear Tina, thanks for visiting HCM, as your father is diabetic, your concern is right that you are likely to have diabetes. signs and symptoms of diabetes - polyuria i.e. excess urination > 3 L /d, excess thirst, polyphagia, i.e. increased appetite and inspite of that weight loss. then there is tingling in feet, wounds do not heal easily, tired lethargic attitude, dimness of vision. you can cnfirm by checking your fasting blood glucose which should be < 126 mg/dl and 2 hr post meal which should be < 200 mg /dl. one more point eat regular meals eat healthy, skipping meals and surviving on coffee with double cream is not a good idea. what is 6.4? it is not clear.
