Have Rapid Breathing, Confusion, Weakness. Raised Urea And Creatinine Levels. Have Diabetes, Raised BP

Hi my mother was in hospital recently for a mild heart attack. She is 83. Before admission she had rapid breathing, appeared confused, weak. On admission she had raised urea and creatinine. She is diabetic on insulin, has raised BP and overweight. At home she has bitter taste in mouth and loss of appetite. We cannot get to eat anything. She is also on medication for BP cholesterol lasix and loprin. Can u suggest how we can restore her appetite .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Hope you are already aware that the enormous stress that she has undergone, the medications and her disturbed physiology have all contributed to the loss of appetite which we usually see in such patients.

Depending on the degree of the suffering, her appetite will spontaneously recover over time. Till then :
1. Ensure she takes the prescribed supplements - vitamins and proteins
2. Enrich her diet with - green leafy vegetables, fruits and other vegetables.
3. As a diabetic she must consume frequent small meals
4. Hope you have already reduced salt intake
5. Avoid spicy, oily foods.
6. Drink lots of water.

Wishing you good health

Cardiologist Dr. Anantharamakrishnan's  Response
Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

One need not / can not do anything specific to improve the appetite in this situation.
Loss of appetite is due to the underlying condition – Kidney impairment, probable cerebrovascular insufficiency, infection (Urinary tract or Chest is common and most likely here) and so on...
As and when her condition gets stabilised, appetite will return.
Aggressive management of blood pressure, infection, kidney function and so on – as also complications if any – is necessary and will bring back the appetite
Discuss with her doctor

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck
