Had Unprotected Sex. Partner Positive For Urea Plasma. Had Burning When Void, Pain In Lower Abdomen. Am I Infected? Who Infected Who?

I recently had unprotected sex with someone I have know for over ten years. This happen the beginning of last month (June). Last week he told me that he had tested positive for ureaplasma. During the time that we were together 2 days he was complaining of pain and discomfort. Which is why he went to the doctor. The result was positive for ureaplasma. I went to my doctor and had him test me for all STD's. He first did a urine test...dirty catch and a clean catch. Moments later he came back and told me that he doesn't think it is necessary to do a blood test because there is no indication of the bacteria in the urine test. My questions are as follow...
1. Can a simple urine test detect the bacteria?

Also he had asked several questions which at the time I had answered no to them...the questions were....
A. Have I had any discharge, cloudy urine or blood in my urine.
B, Any pelvic or urethra pain.
C. Any itching during voiding.
I answered no to all these questions, but a few days later I realized that the information I gave my doctor was incorrect. The reason why I believe it is incorrect is because I do remember having one day some burning when I void, pain in my lower abdomen and a smell when I void. When these things happened I just assumed that it was due to my menstrual cycle, being that this particular month it was very heavy. During which time I used both a pad and tampon at the same time because of the heaviness. So I associated the pain, itch, and smell as an irritation from using tampons which I am not in the habit of using. With that said my other question is....
2. Should I still then be concern and go back and have a blood test done for the ureaplasma even though the doctor said the urine test was negative?....(by the way all STD testing came back negative).
3. This person seems to think that I was the one who infected him.... so what is the possibility that I infected him or that he may have infected me?

Thank you information you can give to help shed some light on this.

Hi Janet! Thank you for your question and welcome to our site.

I appreciate all the details you provided as these really help me in getting a complete picture of your case. Here are my answers to your questions:
1) Only certain bacteria and other pathogens can be tested through a urinalysis. However, a special test (including cultures) is required for ureaplasma.
2) Yes, I would suggest that you go back to your physician and get the test for ureaplasma. Although I am glad that your STD tests came back negative, you have to make sure that you do not have ureaplasma. Both partners should be treated for ureaplasma as it can be transmitted through sexual relations.
3) There is no way of knowing for sure who transmitted to whom, how or when the organism was actually transmitted between partners. What is known for sure is both of you are treated to help prevent its further spread and development of bladder problems.

Just some basic reminders: always practice safe sex and good personal hygiene. I hope I have answered your queries. If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Take care!
