Had Pituitary Gland Tumor Removal. Taking Synthroid. Chest Fluttering, Arm Tingling. What To Do?

Hello

I just had a tumor removed from my puturitary gland about a month ago. Due to that I now have a low thyroid. I started taking Synthiod Levothryroxine June 13 2013. Started taking 0.050mg for the first 2 weeks and then 0.075 mg after that. I felt fine taking them at the beginning but the past few days I have been feeling off. I did some research on the side effects of this drug and I have some of them like the Insomnia, hot flashes , fluttering in the chest, tingling in the arms and feet and feeling nervous. This is the second time this has happened since I started taking them. What should I do? It kind of feels like I am having an Anxiety attack. I used to get those a lot at the beginning of my illness but went away and have not had them in almost 2 years. My Doctor prescribed me with Ativan at the time to help me with this. Is it ok to take one now since I am feeling like this?

Thank you
Zoi

Hi Zoi! Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM.

First, I am glad that your procedure went well and that you have been compliant with your prescribed medications.

To answer your question, I would defer from taking Ativan for the moment. It is possible that your symptoms may be caused by Synthroid which, as you very well said, acts like the normal thyroid hormone.

I advise that you consult your endocrinologist. Let him/her know of your symptoms and examinations and some blood tests may be run. If your thyroid hormone levels are above normal, the dose that you are currently taking needs to be tapered down a bit. You must understand that your body is still adjusting to the hormonal changes that your pituitary gland monitors and controls so you have to be extra vigilant of unusual symptoms such as these. As such, your medications and their effects will need to be monitored as well. If your thyroid hormone levels are within the normal range, then ask him/her about the need for Ativan.

I hope I was able to address your concerns. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to ask me.

Take care!
