Had Allergic Reaction To Hair Color. Face And Eyes Swelled. Blisters On Scalp. Suggestions?

I had a severe allergic reaction to over the counter hair color that I have used for 3 years, about 2 weeks ago. I had to see a doctor. My face swelled up, my eyes were almost swelled shut, I had blisters pop up on my scalp. The P. A. gave me three shots, and two prescriptions. She told me I needed to embrace my grays, she recommended, not coloring my hair again. I'am 48 years old, so I'm not quite ready to do that. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
Firstly you need to treat the reaction that has occurred. The same can be treated with use of oral and topical steroids. If required oral and topical antibiotic can be added too. One must also take oral antihistamine like cetirizine to alleviate itch.
Usually such reactions occur due to a chemical paraphenylene diamine or PPD in hair color. So you may try using another hair color which is PPD free. If in case you still develop any reaction, no matter how mild it is, it would be better that you start using henna. Henna too can offer a nice brown or burgundy tone to your hair.
Hope that helped.
