Growing Lump In Breast With Sore Red Nipple. No Tests Done. Cancerous?

have sore nipple on breast - reddening, lump under left breast. Came on suddenly. Didn't notice a problem until nipple became sore. Had a sonogram setup around july 2013. The lady to do the test said medicare won't pay unless there is a lump or breasts are dense. She did not examin me -so I did not want to have a mammogram because I heard the tests itself would cause cancer even though I have been consistant before. Now I am sure I am in trouble now. The lump is bigger than a golf ball. Being this is a weekend - I have to wait til Monday. I wished you had something posistive to tell me. I have been very stressed the past 3 years with family problems and Iive next to a field all my life with pesticides, fertilizers and wind.

Hi!
welcome to HCM!
Breast lumps are common, especially in women ages 30 to 50. A number of conditions can result in a lump or lumps in your breast. Most of these conditions are harmless or of minor concern.
Painful lump of short duration is rarely cancerous, you might be having subareolar abscess.you must get examined and start treatment but without worry.
A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast,it can be used for screening or for diagnostic purposes, mammogram doesnot cancer Mammograms require very small doses of radiation. The risk of harm from this radiation exposure is extremely low, but repeated x-rays have the potential to cause cancer.
hope this helps!Take care!

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Any suspected lump in breast should be completely investigated to rule out cancer even if it appears harmless. Nowadays ultrasound scan is also used in mammography and is free from any radiation and can be done for any age group. The X ray mammography is also done alongside if necessary.

I suggest you get ultrasound scan of both breast and axillary regions done immediately. This may be followed by consultation with a surgeon who can refer you to X ray mammography and FNAC/ biopsy if required. Please do not worry about insurance because staying healthy is more important.

Any treatment can be suggested only after ultrasound scan and mammography.

Hope this helps
