Grade Three ACL Tear, Calf Pain, Swelling. MRI To Be Done. Blood Clotting?

My 15 yr old son was injured during football practice. It is suspected that he has a grade III ACL tear and he will be getting an MRI to confirm. This injury occurred a few days ago but he is now saying that his calf hurts more than his knee and his calf is quite swollen. Is this normal or should I be concerned about a blood clot or something?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The pain in the calf could be due to a blood clot formation or a hematoma due to the injury itself. It needs to be examined and investigated to find out the cause. Keep the foot elevated on two pillows to reduce the swelling.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
