Frequent Cold And Coughs, Developed Wheezing. Prescribed Pulmicort Respule. Is This Asthma ?
Hi my son is 3 year old, sice 7 months of age he has had frequent cold and cough which would lead to ear infections. This got better at age 2 but he started developing wheezing. Last year at age 2 he had mid pneumonia, and was hospitalised and was on beducort and dualin 4 times a day for a week.Than he had another severe wheezing episode in April this year. He was on asthalin and beducort for one week. After which doctor put him on montair lc for one month and montair kid for one month. Though he got much better, now last week the wheezing started again. We are in US and doctor has prescribed pulmicort respule 0.5 mg daily for next 8 months, because it gets very cold here. And if he has cold or wheezing albuterol 2.5 mg every 4 hours
I want to understand that is this condition asthma.
Is there any side effect for this medicine in long term.
Would an inhaler be better than nebulising every day.

To start with your son is having recurrent infections since childhood as in 7 months.he has got admitted as well for the same.by looking at your scenario it feels that your son has more of asthma like picture than typical infections.
one of the conditions which also present with recurrent infections in that age is heart defects,but accordint to your history he gets better with immuno modulators and nebulizations.and they look more of asthma then infections.plus theres no mention of the birth history.also children with heart defects do not gain wt so well.so all these things are against heart defect.but to be on the better side you can concern your doctor once.(dont feel panic).we are just ruling out things here for your child to be better.there are not much side effects for these medicines.but is there family history of asthma involved?
since ur child is just 3 years old i would prefer nebulization over inhaler.
