Extreme Foot Pain, Former Marathon Runner. Having BP, Taking Statin. Will Taking Medicines For Foot Pain Affect My Heart?
Hi Dr K,
I'm writing on behalf of my brother-in-law. He is about 80. He is on a statin for his heart (he had a heart attack a number of years ago) and at least one high blood pressure med -- I think a Beta Blocker. He is a former marathon runner. His constant running has created extreme foot pain. Today, he can hardly walk. He is fearful about taking any meds to relieve the pain because of concerns related to his heart and blood pressure issues and meds. He has an appointment with his cardiologist in July. What meds might he ask his cardiologist about? Thanks Stuart
Hi, at the age of 80years the possibility is for osteoarthritis, and he can use pain killers selectively, as some of the pain killers may cause increase in hypertension and heart condition. nimisulide and ibuprofen are most likely to cause rise in B.P. Rest of the drugs you can use with the advise of your doctor, and periodic checkups. I to my patients with this condition prescribe neurotropic injections, and aceclofenac, diclofenac, or piroxicam if necessory. Thank you.
