Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
MY HEART RATE IS NORMALLY 65 TO 75. I HAVE PVC S OCCASIONALLY . WHEN I DRINK WINE MY HEART RATE WILL INCREASE INTO THE HIGH 90 (NINETY S). I HAVE NOTICED RED WINE IS WORSE THAN WHITE WINE TO INCREASE THE HEART RATE AND WHEN I DRINK WINE THE PVC S COME MORE OFTEN. I HAVE WORN THE MONITORS FOR 24 HOURS A FEW TIMES, THE PVC S DO EXIST EVEN WHEN I DON T DRINK ALCOHOL. THE CARDIOLOGIST HAS SAID THE PVC S ARE NOT THE DANGEROUS TYPE. I ONLY DRINK 2 GLASSES OF WHITE WINE NO MORE AND ONLY 2 TIMES A WEEK. MY HEART RATE INCREASES WHEN I DRINK IT USUALLY OCCURS AT NIGHT WHEN I GO TO SLEEP AND WAKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MORNING. I FIND IT STRANGE THE HEART RATE INCREASES USUALLY AFTER I GO TO SLEEP. MY QUESTION IS. 1. IS RED WINE WORSE THAN WHITE WINE TO CAUSE THE INCREASE IN HEART RATE ?? 2. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON REDUCING THE HEART RATE ONCE IT INCREASE BECAUSE I DRANK WINE. I DO NOT DRINK HARD LIQUOR ANYMORE. 3. I AM 74 YEARS OLD , 5 3 145 POUNDS , IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE. 4. I TAKE METROPOLO ER SUF 12 MG TWICE DAILY THANK YOU
Yes, wine consumption does increase the heart rate. Based on the history you seem to be having PVCs which get aggravated upon consumption of wine for which you are being prescribed Metoprolol ER.
Both red wine as well white are equally responsible for the increasing the heart rate in susceptible individuals.
Alcohol is a risk factor for cardiac arrhythmias and drinking alcohol of any kind can also have negative health consequences, especially on the liver and brain. Avoid alcohol in any form, continue taking Metoprolol as prescribed.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
