Does Using Monistat For Yeast Infection Prevention While Trying To Conceive Affect Sperm Vitality And Motility?

Hello we are currently TTC and I’m on a 10 day dose of antibiotics for a sinus infection. My Dr recommended doing monistat on days 2,5 and 9 of antibiotics to try to prevent a yeast infection. Turns out fluconazal is not good for your liver. So at this moment I don’t have a yeast infection. I am suppose to take the monistat today but also suppose to try to conceive if I take the monistat an hour after sex will it kill the sperm.

Hello,

If you have yeast infection or your partner has yeast infection, both of you are advised to get it treated first, before trying to conceive. If you leave it untreated it will cause symptoms like itching, irritation, soreness, swelling, and discomfort. It is quite contagious; it can get easily transmitted to the partner. If the male partner gets infected it can affect the urethra, prostate, hence it can affect with the functioning of the sperm indirectly.

It can also cause complications like orchitis, prostatitis, urethritis, etc. In case of a yeast infection, it may also contain the fungi responsible for the infection. This fungus may interfere with the functioning of the sperm and cause infertility if left untreated. At present, before you have conceived, take antifungal medicines and apply Monistat vaginal suppositories. Manage your hygiene better. The treatment should be done by both the partners. You can try to conceive after the infection in both the partners have cleared.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
