Does Congestive Heart Failure Cause Swelling In The Feet, Ankles And Face?

I have respiratory problems and am on Pro Air Inh., Symbicort Inh, and Spiriva daily. I just got off Predisone pills and an antibiotic which I took for ten days. I finished them a week ago. i'm still wheezing and not breathing good which is unusual after being on the steroid pills. My question to you is this, I am starting to swell in my feet and ankles and my face is very swollen. This has never happened to me before. Is this a sign that I might be getting Congestion Heart Failure? I have never had any problems with my heart, so far. I watch my sodium content very carefully, always. I can't understand why I'm swelling like this.

Hello!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your symptoms could be related to fluid retention, possibly caused by heart failure.

Other possible causes of increased fluid retention are kidney and liver dysfunction or an electrolyte imbalance.

Coming to this point, I recommend consulting with your attending physician and performing some tests:

-a cardiac ultrasound and NT pro BNP levels for heart failure
- complete blood count
- liver and kidney function tests
- fasting glucose
- blood electrolytes.

Hope to have been helpful!

If you have any other questions, I would be glad to answer at any time!

Wishing good health,

Dr. Iliri
