Does Bowel Movements Get Impacted By My Use Of Tums?

I have had heartburn for weeks now and was taking Pepcid ac 40mg with little impact. Recently switched to Prilosec 40mg and doubled up with tums (10 tablets a day). Heartburn is gone! But after 3 days I now have pale stool. My blood work from a month ago showed normal levels of billrubin and I do not have jaundice. I am wondering if my bowel movements have been impacted by my use of tums? I am also on rosuvastatin for my cholesterol as well as propranolol for anxiety.

Hello,

You are experiencing side effects of the medicine taken. Never overdose yourself with medicines. It causes pale stool as it increases transit time of stool. Dietary changes can also cause pale stool. At present, your blood works show normal reports. You should stop taking Prilosec 40mg or take one only when required. It should help to relieve the symptoms. If not, take a repeat blood test for bilirubin, LFT, etc. Take CT to detect any swelling in the liver or bile duct. Your treatment will depend on the pathology diagnosed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
