Does Bactrin Cause Swollen Lip?

my son had a infected finger and it caused a infection in his vein a red line from the finger to the under arm. He was treated in the er and given iv med and said he had cellulitits. they also gave him bactrin by mouth. The next morning he has swollen lips but the red line is gone and the lymp node under his arm is not swolllen any more. What could be causing his lips to swell. Do you think it could be from the infection in his body or maybe the medicine reaction. They are still waiting on the blood culture to come in.

Hi,

Bactrim is a combination of two antibiotics namely sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial Infections like middle ear, urinary tract, respiratory, Intestinal Infections. It is also used to prevent and treat a certain type of pneumonia (pneumocystis type).

Symptom of a serious allergic reactions of this medication are rashes, itching, swelling of lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulties, dizziness etc. So, swelling of lips may be caused by this medication as side effects. Antihistamines and cortico-steroid can be used to get rid of lips swelling. Consult with your prescribing doctor, he may change this medication and choose another medication for him.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
