Does An Injured Foot Which Is Swollen, Bruised And Sore Require Total Rest?

I had an injury to my right foot (leg og chair hit it), Three days later it became very swollen, bruised and sore. Ten days later the swelling has reduced. Orthopaedic doctor said its a 50 50 as to bone fracture or tissue damage. She has a MRI booked for me for the 18th (10 days away) She told me to stay off my foo, rest and keep it elevated as much as possible My question, in your opinion should i take time off work. Thank you Lindsay

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.
Not total rest.
Rest your foot for several days. Try NOT to put much weight on your foot.
Put on an ACE bandage. You also can buy a brace that supports your foot.
Use crutches or a cane to help take the weight off a sore or unsteady foot.
The injury may take a few weeks to many months to fully heal. Once the pain and swelling are mostly gone, the injured ankle will still be a little weaker and less stable than the uninjured foot.
You will need to start exercises to strengthen your ankle and avoid injury in the future. Do not begin these exercises until a health care professional tells you it is safe to start.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
