Does Tums Interact With Zantac?

For many years I have been prescribed an anti-reflux medicine. And for part of those years I have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Just to change things up a bit, my doctor said to stop the prescribed med and begin taking Zantac twice daily. I forgot to take the second one yesterday. This morning I waked up with pain behind my sternum. I took the Zantac this morning; at noon I took 4 Tums, then again at 1:45. Is it okay to take Tums while I m on Zantac? I still have the pain; should I take the second Zantac now?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Tums is an antacid made of sucrose and calcium carbonate. It is used to treat symptoms caused by too much stomach acid such as heartburn, upset stomach, or indigestion.

Zantac is composed of ranitidine. It relieves heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach.

A minor drug Interaction is known to exist between Zantac and tums. Minor drug interactions do not usually cause harm or require a change in therapy.

You may continue with the present medication as prescribed by your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
