Does Thyronorm Cause Weight Gain?

Hello Doc, My TSH level was 1.690 during the 9 th month of my pregnancy and I was having 100 mg thyronorm tablet. I got my test done 6 weeks post my delivery and currently my TSH level is 0.040. My doctor has advised me to consume 50 mg thyronorm tablet. My query :- Should I reduced the dosage? Can a person put on weight cause of taking a higher dose than required?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi mam
As per your case the diagnosis is most probably hypothyroidism due to may be autoimmunity or iodine deficiency.
Since you are postpartum currently with low TSH after about 6 weeks hence you must stop thyroxine and then repeat TSH after 4 weeks and then we may decide treatment after the same.
Also the cut off values of TSH for starting treatment is different during pregnant and non pregnant state.
For pregnancy the cut off is For non pregnant state the normal TSH is .5 -5
Also mam hypothyroidism is associated with weight gain and thyroxine intake is asssociate with some weight loss or no change
