Does Plaquenil Cause Hallucination?
CAN PLAQUENIL CAUSE PSYCHOTIC S/S IN SOME PATIENTS. WE HAVE A PT THAT STARTED PLAQUENIL IN DECEMBER 2016, AND IS NOW EXPERIENCING MANY OF THE S.E. AND IS ALSO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HER LIFE HAVING V/A HALLUCINATIONS, AND CURRENTLY TACTILE HALLUCINATIONS.

Thank you for using HCM.
Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) may cause psychiatric side effects. Such manifestations are exceptional, little known and principally described during treatment of malaria.
The clinical presentation of the psychosis induced by Plaquenil in a patient without psychiatric past of manifestations such as delirium, hallucinations, maniac episodes or depression, may begin after an interval of a few hours to 40 days, usually regressing one week after suspension of the treatment.
So, eventhough this side effect is really rare, i would suggest you to stop the treatment with Plaquenil, replacing it with another analog drug, consulting with your treating doctor. If the symptoms do dissapear after 7 -10 days, you do not need any further medical attention regarding this issue. If these symptoms continue, besides the interuption of the medication , than you should see a psychiatrist.
