Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a caregiver and my patient refuses to take her furosemide (lasix). She claims it makes her legs hurt, she urinates all day (shes in a wheel chair ) and its too much for her to handle. She is only prescribed 1 pill a week but will not take it. Her legs are getting very swollen. Can you tell me what will happen if she does not take it so I can let her know?
Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. Lasix contains furosemide. It is a diuretic drug, which will eliminate excess collection of water from the soft tissues through passing of urine. Since it causes loss of potassium, she must be experiencing leg pain as the side effect of the drug. Instead, to decrease her swelling in the legs, she can be administered potassium-sparing diuretic like Spironolactone. She should tolerate this drug better than lasix. Kindly consult Physician in this regard for the change in drug and proper dosage depending on her clinical condition. Hope the information provided is clear. All the best.
