Do Low Levels Of Vitamin B 12 Cause Symptoms Of MS?

Hi there, I seem to have all the typical symptoms of MS very constant for the last month and getting worse, numbness, weakness, burning pins all over, eyes bother me: flashes and pain but no double vision, now it is hard to swallow and my saliva sometimes leaks out. Vertigo and nausea. I had been told that my B12 was low (range from 145-168), has been for 10 years. I was taking supplements and injections for months recently and my B12 serum was not changing in blood tests. They did a homocysteine test and it was normal. Conclusion was that since this was normal, I don t have a true deficiency or anemia. Dr. won t order any more injections and says I am just one of those people for which the serum test does not work. I have had these problems and muscle spasms, fatigue for many years and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia but now I am sure there is more going on. I am actually leaning more towards the possibility of MS because of these symptoms and strange episodes of uncontrollable crying for no reason. I am 42 y/o female. My question is whether I can be having severe B12 def. symptoms if my homocysteine was just fine? Should I pursue this B12 thing? Thanks so much for your help. Vickie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have symptoms of MS. Since you have been diagnosed with B12 deficiency, you should get diagnosed if you have pernicious anemia. Pernicious anemia is commonly caused due to the deficiency of B12.

Myeloma patients do develop B12 deficiencies. You can take food rich in vitamin B, B3, B6, B12 & minerals. You can take dietary supplements also.

Since you are having ins & needle sensations get Nerve Conduction tests done to rule out any developing Peripheral Neuropathy.

Take food rich in vitamin E, you can take Evion - 400, once daily for 15 days to help to swallow easier. Take semi-solid food like Oats, porridge, etc.

You are suggested to visit ER, get audiometry & middle ear to examine dby ENT to get treated for Vertigo.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
