Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am in Argentina- I was at the border of Argentina and Chile in Patagonia 3 days ago and I thought that I was bitten by a friendly domestic puppy who was teething at the time. I checked the skin and it was red but was not bleeding. Three days later, I have a small straight scabbed scratch in the same area. I am not sure if it is from the puppy or something else but if it is the latter, it is a big coincidence. The puppy appeared to be domesticated and friendly however I am nervous that I may have contracted rabies. I was wearing a long sleeved top at the time when the puppy may have bitten me so it was through my top. I was also immunised for rabies 5 years ago. I know that I may be being paranoid but given the fatality rates of rabies, I want to be sure- am I safe? Or do I need to seek treatment?
Hi & Welcome. I can understand your concern. Since you are immunized for rabies 5 years ago, you need to take two booster doses of the anti rabies vaccine on day 0 and 3 along with a tetanus toxoid shot. Hope this answers your query.
