Discomfort Due To Fracture In 8th And 9th Rib, Extremely Uncomfortable Right Shoulder Blade. Should I Worry ?

I fractured my 8th and 9th rib 5days ago. I have been sleeping up right every day since because of the discomfort. I would feel my rib rubbing like cranking against each other. Yesterday my left arm felt funny from when i woke up till the late afternoon (I assumed bc i fell asleep with my arm elevated). Now Ive woken up in the middle of the right feeling a huge not in my shoulder blade that is extremely uncomfortable and my arm feels funny again. Should i be going back to the ER?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

A certain amount of soreness or tightness is felt normally in the muscles that are kept stretched over a long time. This is normal response and will settle down spontaneously.

Fractured ribs need only adequate time to heal (roughly 3 weeks). Take daily calcium supplements to hasten early healing of broken ribs. Avoid lying on the injured side.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Dr. Praveen Tayal's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The pain and discomfort that you are having is likely to be due to the fractured rib. Taking a good muscle relaxant in combination with a mild pain killer will help in relieving the symptoms.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you. You can consult me again directly through my profile URL http://bit.ly/Dr-Praveen-Tayal
