Diagnosed With Aspergers And ADHD, Had Tonic Chronic Epilepsy, Had Aggressive Behaviour, Mood Swings. Suggest Treatment?

My daughter is nearly 17. She was diagnosed with Aspergers and ADHD when about 5 years old. She had tonic clonic epilepsy for three years from 3 to 6 years of age. I am wondering whether she has been misdiagnosed as she has mood swings and can get very aggressive. She is tells lies about almost everything. She also has moderate to severe learning difficulties. She has three aunts with bipolar disorder and another aunt on the other side of the family with schizo affective disorder.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi there ~

I understand your concerns. It is hard to live with a daughter that has all these problems. Aspergers, ADHD are comorbid and tonic clonic seizure disorder (GTCS) is not an uncommon condition associated with this disorder, however treating the ADHD will become difficult in this scenario with the medications for both these disorders interacting to make one or the other conditions worse and thus making it challenging to treat. The frustration with having these condition can agitate and make the patient aggressive. However this is symptomatically treated with antipsychotic and sedative medications. I hope you consult a qualified psychiatrist who can help with the medication management part of it and a counselor who can help determine an activity schedule for your child. I hope this helps.

Take care and have a lovely day!
