Could Alternating Depression And Happiness Be Due To Bipolar Disorder?

About an hour ago I was quite happy but suddenly felt really depressed for no reason, I was crying for about half hour about nothing then suddenly I felt fine, five minutes later I was crying again. This has been happening now for a few months and I'm really worried as my mother is bipolar. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

hi, thanks for writing..

bipolar disorder also runs in families..in bipolar disorder there are two main types.in bipolar type 1 there alternating episodes of mania with depression and it is of more severity.

in bipolar type 2 there are episodes of depression with hypomania alternately..this is some what less severe but causes lot of problems..

what you are describing is rapidly changing mood change that can be ultra rapid cycling bipolar disorder, but there many things to be asked before a diagnosis can be made..

there are high chances of you having bipolar disorder, so you shud consult a psychiatrist and tell your feelings and symptoms, also talk about rapidly changing mood without a reason..

there are drugs which are different for treatment of both types of bipolar disorders, so making a diagnosis will be very helpful,. that happens only by visiting a psychiatrist..

drugs will help you..so you shud seek treatment..

i hope this advice will be helpful to you..best of luck..

Hi, thanks for the query a family history of bipolar disorder is certainly a risk for having bipolar disorder. What is your age? since teenage is associated with a stormy period of unpredictable mood swings in many people. Are you by any chance into use of drugs like amphetamine, alcohol, marijuana, MDMA, ecstasy? since these & many other drugs are known to unmask, precipitate an episode of bipolar disorder. Lastly, there is a category known as cyclothymia which tends to fit your description of alternating mood swings over a daily basis. ALL of these issues can be clarified by scheduling an appointment with your GP/Psychiatrist. Relax, dont worry & be honest in assessment
Hope this helps; good luck

Hello,
This can be a symptom of uktra-rapid cycling bipolar disorder or mixed bipolar disorder. But here I would like to mention that bipolar disorder is not diagnosed based on just one symptom. Bipolar disorder passes on in the family members. So I advice you to visit your nearest psychiatrist for comprehensive evaluation and take appropriate treatment.
Thanks
