Could A Median Nerve Neuropathy Due To Thumb Injury Cause Permanent Damage?

I sustained an injury to my right thumb / wrist in August 2009. After a visit to the consultant (9 months after injury) I was told it was a UCL sprain. Because I was getting lots of pins and needles and no thumb movement. I asked about nerve damage, he just said probably and didn't ask to see me again. After 1 year and 5 month I was sent for a NCT, it has come back as median nerve neuropathy. Do you think after so long I could have permanent damage and what do you think may be causing loss of movement?
