Hi, I have just recently had a copper coil fitted, and I was wonder if it was ok to use st johns wort without it effecting the contraception. I know that st johns wort can effect the contraceptive pill which I used to use, however the coil I have is copper with no hormones. I cant find anything to say that it causes any issues, but just need check?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

St. John’s wort doesn’t cause any interaction with copper-T and doesn’t result in contraceptive failure. It acts by different mechanism when compared to oral pills. You are absolutely right that the st John’s wort interact with oral contraceptive pills and may cause its failure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
