Child Has Infected, Hard Ball On Leg. Pus-filled Lesion. Prescribed Antibiotics. Should We Go To ER?
Hello, my three year old son developed an infected hard ball on the back of his leg. Our pede prescribed an antibiotic for him. She said to watch out for pussing so that if it does they can drain it. Well it's Sunday so the office is not open and it has begun to puss. I have him in a warm bath now, should I take him to the er?
The description which you provide suggest that pus discharge is taking place and the boil needs to be drained. The best course would be to keep him on an empty stomach for 3-4 hours before the doctor decides to lance it and drain it. Thereafter it shall be packed and regular dressing would have to be done. You can give him some anti-inflammatory in case it has not been prescribed already.
I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.
You need to take him in for the pus to be drained as antibiotics alone will not cure the infection and drainage is necessary. Keep him on the antibiotic for now but take him in as soon as you can.
As the pus is formed in the lesion, the pus should be drained under aseptic precautions to relive the pain and infection in addition to oral antibiotics.
For pain you can give Tylenol or ibuprofen in prescribed dose.
If it is small and still in the way of pus formation, you can wait to see the pediatrician till the morning.
If it is large and with pain and tense, consult emergency for the drainage of pus.
