Child Has Abnormal Bowel Movement, Mucoid Stool, Stomach Pain And Gas. Suggestions?

Hi, doctors. my son is 9 and half months old. he is suffering from mal-absorption problem (watery plus semi solid type stool ). stool R/E test done yesterday showed 1-3/hpf pus cell and also fat globule and vegetable cells positive. he is frequently suffering from this problem. Last month he also had a severe dysentery and the pus cell count was more than 50 and ciprocin antibiotic was given. He was then cured but after 1 week he again faced abnormal bowel movement , mucoid stool, stomach pain, gas formation and it is continuing with 2-4 days gap. What to do? please give me a suggestion.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

Frequent attacks of loose motions is suggestive of some lapse in hygiene while feeding the child. If you are bottle feeding then you have to ensure that the bottle and nipple are boiled properly sterilized before every feed.

At this age the child starts moving around and will put every thing in the mouth. You have to ensure cleanliness and gradually desuade your son from putting dirty things in the mouth.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your son an early recovery.

Regards,

RKK

Hi,
I think your baby is suffering from recurrent attacks of gastroenteritis and needs a good antibiotic course in the right dosage .Maintain good hygiene as babies keep putting things in their mouth to avoid infection.also discuss with the Docter whether he has lactose intolerance which happens after bouts of gastroenteritis .For this one can give probiotics and zinc to improve digestion and with time this lactose intolerance should settle .Restrict his milk intake and instead give him proper food like vegetable pulses and cereals.
Bye
Take Care.

Hi,
Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.
Your child is having gastroentiritis.
The mainstay of treatment is to maintain hydration.
Give sips of oral rehydration fluids like Pedialyte, coconut water to prevent dehydration.
Monitor his hydration by activity, urine output, and skin turgor.
Probiotics for 3 to 5 days and zinc supplementation for 2 weeks will help to reduce the diarrhea.
Consult your Pediatrician for the assessment of your child and for treatment.
Hope I have answered your query.
