Child. Injury To Foot, Ankle, Difficulty To Put Weight On It, Limping, Small Indentation In The Area. X-ray Normal. Thoughts?

My 2 1/2 year old had an injury to her foot/ankle on Wednesday. I took her for an X-ray on thurs. dr said that the X-ray was neg, but if she did not improve to bring her back for a repeat X-ray in 1 week. She has not been able to put any weight on it from wed to today (Sunday). Today I put a pair of boots on her &she has been able to weight on it & has been limping around with & without the boots, but has cried a couple of times with pain after she's been on her foot for a while. The place that she points to when I ask where it hurts has a small indentation. What could this be & should I take her to another dr?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, at the age of 2 1/2 years, most of the bones in the foot are CARTILAGENOUS. So, its almost impossible to pick up any bony injury by conventional xrays and the better way of diagnosing any soft tissue injury is by undergoing MRI scans of the injured area.

The indentation which you see could be at the site of injury may be due to buckling of the bone (which is a form of fracture in children -incomplete fracture/Green stick fracture). As Children has enormous bone regeneration potential, simple 2-3 weeks of rest and protected weight bearing is all that she needs to get back to normal.

If you are concerned, approach an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is normal. Good day
