Can Xanax Cause Any Risk To The Fetus?

Hi Doctor, I just found out last week that I'm 5 weeks pregnant.
I have been having severe anxiety attacks and insomnia and was on medication (stilnox to help me sleep and xanax to calm me down) My psychiatrist said it was okay for me to continue with stilnox or dormicum but my OB was against it. She said xanax is okay. I don't want to risk any fetal development/miscarriage. But these sleepless nights are getting me really tired. And no matter how tired I am, I can't seemed to fall asleep.

Hello,

Thanks for posting,

According to the manufacturers of xanax (alprazolam), it is classified under pregnancy category D, which means that it should be used only in LIFE-THREATENING emergencies when no safer drug is available. There is positive evidence of human fetal risk.
Now given this warning, I will immediately say that you should use xanax while having in mind that there is a possibility of fetal risk. In the other hand, your doctors might just be making a better decision for you by asking you to continue xanax while being pregnant. Also, take note that, severe anxiety attack can also be a risk to pregnancy especially when early (spontaneous abortion is possible). In the other hand, xanax would not lead to a miscarriage but severe attacks can lead to involuntary uterine contractions, that can lead to a miscarriage.
Try meditations techniques and yoga to relax you and avoid all triggers of your anxiety. Anything you know that can trigger your attacks, just avoid (which means you might need to be at home most of the time until your pregnancy can advance). If you stayed off xanax and able to cope with the attacks, then that will be a better way to go.
Try following your doctors' advise.

Hope this helps
