Can Waking Up With A Sudden Complete Hearing Loss In An Ear (little Ringing) Be Restored?

I woke up three months ago with complete hearing loss in the left ear. All I have is 24/7 static, but little ringing or humming. Local doctoring, including an MRI, shows nothing. One doctor calls it a vacated ear. The window of opportunity for regaining hearing was five days with steroid injections, but I didn t know that, and I couldn t get an appointment for a week later anyways. I have had hearing tests down and the MRI. Hearing aids, I was told, won t work. Is there a point in getting a third opinion from the Mayo Clinic? Is there a way to restore the hearing, or if not, unplug the static? I have slight motion sickness and don t want to risk secondary, irreparable problems by disconnecting the ear. My right ear is fine. My current medical files and MRIs would be made available. I live in northwestern Minnesota. Thank You. Fr. Jeff Ethen

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to health care magic,

As you rightly opined, the window of opportunity is in the initial few days which is very crucial but in any case even if this and other treatment like plasma expanders are initiated there would have been no response.

In most of the cases the cause of hearing loss cannot be diagnosed. It is because of the hearing loss that you have the ringing sound or the tinnitus.

There are different modes of treatment and they are a lot which essentially means that they may not be very effective. However I have had good experience with a prostaglandin analogue which goes by the name of tinnicar which your doctor will surely know

Furthermore other treatment options are hearing aid, tinnitus maskers, intratympanic injections to name a few. You can ask your ENT in Mayo clinic about the same

hope this helps and if you need further information you can get back to me

regards
