my son is taking clindamycin 150mg. this is his 3rd day of taking it. it was prescribed when he had a wisdom tooth pulled. he took it about 30 minutes ago and he got a pounding headache and said he felt like his esophagus is on fire. could he be allergic to this or is this a side effect of the drug

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

In brief it is antibiotic induced Hyperacidity..

Burning sensation in esophagus can be due to hyperacidity and acid reflux caused due to antibiotic intake and is common side effects of antibiotics..
Headache can also be a side effect..
No it is not an allergic reaction and just a side effect of Clindamycin..
So my advise to you is that he should continue taking the medication and till the time he is taking antibiotic he can take empty stomach Pantoprazole to reduce the symptoms..
He can take antacid half an hour before meals.
Avoid spicy and heavy meals and take probiotics like Yogurt..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
