Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi! It is already about a year thst my 18 year old son has black gums .He says it is because of smoking for 4 years. During this past year h had much stress connected with illness and death of several close people. He is very sensitive and managed to hellp them. Can this be because of stress? Is it dangerous?
As per your complain yes, smoking is a cause for dark pigmentation of gums as when a person smokes there is heat as well as chemical injury to the gums leading to deposition of melanin pigment under the gums leading to black discolouration..
I would suggest you to consult an Addiction medicine specialist and he can do a proper counseling and advise Nicotine replacement therapy like Nicotine gum, skin patches etc to reduce the urge of smoking and gradually will take off the habit..
Along with it he should daily massage the gums with fingers in round gentle motion or with soft toothbrush bristles as it helps in cell growth in that area and will gradually reduce pigmentation..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
